AMSTERDAM, THE NETHERLANDS — Ahold, the owner of Stop & Shop stores in the United States, said second-quarter net sales at Ahold USA rose 16% to €3,808 million ($5,393 million). Overall, net sales at Ahold were €6,430 million ($9,107 million) in the second quarter, up 12% from €5,769 million in the same period a year ago. In the United States, Ahold said Stop & Shop and Giant-Landover continued to drive improved performance and Giant-Carlisle invested aggressively in price and promotions. During the second quarter, sales at Stop & Shop/Giant-Landover totaled $4,120 million, up 2.8%, while sales at Giant-Carlisle were $1,113 million, down 0.4% year over year.
