Bob’s Red Mill recalls organic amaranth flour due to health risk
MILWAUKIE, ORE. — Bob’s Red Mill Natural Foods on April 6 announced it is voluntarily recalling 2,099 cases of Organic Amaranth Flour after testing revealed the presence of Salmonella in a single lot of the flour with a “sell by” date of Nov. 26, 2015.
The recalled flour was sold in 22-oz bags and distributed in California, Florida, Michigan, North Dakota, Nebraska, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Texas and Washington starting June 11, 2014. The last shipment of the recalled lot took place on Aug. 7, 2014, the company said.
“While this product expired in November 2015, this product was found on the shelves of one retail store, and thus Bob’s Red Mill is recalling the product out of an abundance of caution,” the company noted in the announcement. “Consumers who have any of this affected product should not consume it and should return it to the place of purchase for credit or refund or throw it away.”
Bob’s Red Mill said other “sell by” dates and lots of Organic Amaranth Flour are not affected by the recall, and there have been no reports of any injuries or illnesses associated with the recall. The company said it has begun an investigation of the source of the problem in the supply chain.
This is the second flour recall in the past several weeks. On March 23, King Arthur Flour Co. issued a recall of 6,300 cases of organic coconut flour after testing revealed the presence of Salmonella in one 16-oz bag.
