MEXICO CITY — Saving and the efficient use of energy to reduce the company’s carbon footprint are among the sustainability efforts under way at Grupo Bimbo S.A.B. de C.V., the company said Oct. 21 as part of World Energy Saving Day.
The Mexico City-based company said it also has installed efficient lighting technologies and uses solar light in all its production plants.
“Thanks to actions like these, we can claim that during last year, we reduced our energy consumption in 1.93% in our production facilities and 4.65% in depots,” said Alejandra Vazquez, sustainability manager for Grupo Bimbo. “Just during 2011, we replicated over 70 best practices throughout our organizations. Noteworthy are the gradual change to high efficiency engines, the turning on and off of the equipment and the installation of highly efficient burners and electronic carburation equipment as well as the insulation of ovens and boilers.”
Ms. Vazquez said Grupo Bimbo also uses an Energy Administration System that allows for a reliable index on the consumption of heat and electric energy, making it possible to assess the effectiveness of the actions undertaken, analyze trends and identify the best performance levels for each operation. This system, she said, illustrates how certain actions may better control and improve the energy performance in the company’s operations.
Ms. Vazquez also said Grupo Bimbo plans to ratify its leadership as a promoter of sustainability and carbon footprint reduction in industrial operations.
