GLENDALE, CALIF. – Nestle USA has initiated a recall of some California Pizza Kitchen and DiGiorno branded frozen pizzas after pieces of plastic were found in the products. The pizzas being recalled were manufactured at the company’s plant in Little Chute, Wis., between Feb. 26 and March 9 of 2013.
The specific varieties of pizza subject to the recall include California Pizza Kitchen Limited Edition Grilled Chicken with Cabernet Sauce, California Pizza Kitchen Crispy Thin Crust White, DiGiorno Crispy Flatbread Pizza Tuscan Style Chicken, and DiGiorno pizzeria! White Pizza.
The problem was discovered after Nestle USA received consumer complaints about pieces of plastic in the California Pizza Kitchen Crispy Thin Crust White Pizza variety. The pieces of plastic have been traced to a shipment of spinach used in the production of the frozen pizzas. No complaints have been received regarding the other three frozen pizza products being recalled.
Food products contaminated with foreign materials have been a problem recently. In January, Annie’s Inc. initiated a recall of frozen pizzas after it learned small pieces of metal may have been mixed in with the dough to make the crust. The source of the fragments was traced to a third-party supplier that Annie’s uses to source whole wheat flour.
In October 2012, the Kellogg Co. recalled an estimated 3.2 million boxes of Mini-Wheats in the United States, Canada and Mexico due to possible fragments of metal mesh that may have gotten into the products. The company said the metal contamination may be due to a faulty manufacturing part.
