WASHINGTON — The average price paid for white pan bread decreased in April while the price for whole wheat bread increased, according to the latest data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor.
The national average retail price of white pan bread was 140.9c, down 0.3c per lb from March and down 1.7c from April 2012. The decrease followed an increase of 0.1c per lb in March. On a month-to-month basis, the average price for white pan bread in April rose in two regions — up 2.1c in the Midwest and up 1.9c in the South — and fell in two regions — down 4.5c in the Northeast and down 3.9c in the West.
At 204.6c per lb, the national average price for whole wheat bread was up 2.2c per lb from March and up 2.7c per lb from April 2012.
The national average price of family flour in April was 52.2c per lb, up 2.3c from March and up 0.7c from April 2012.
The national average price for spaghetti and macaroni in April was 128.6c per lb, down 3.7c from March and down 3c from April 2012. Chocolate chip cookies were 372.9c per lb, down 4.5c from March and down 11.2c from April 2012. The national average price of white long-grain rice was 72.4c per lb, up 1c from March and up 2.8c from April 2012.
