ABBOTSFORD, B.C. — Silver Hills Bakery, a provider of organic, non-bioengineered sprouted whole grain bread, said it is putting its wheat through third-party testing to assure its products are free from contamination.
The bakery said it now is testing every single lot of wheat for both quality and genetic composition.
“At Silver Hills, we believe that everyone has a right to know what’s in their food and to choose whether or not to eat food that has been genetically engineered,” said Stan Smith, president of Silver Hills Bakery. “As a company, we’re committed to non-G.M.O. ingredients because we believe food was created to be grown, eaten and enjoyed naturally without any fear of consuming a genetically compromised food source.”
Silver Hills cited the detection of an unapproved bioengineered trait in wheat plant samples from an Oregon farm as a key factor behind the company’s decision to conduct third-party testing.
