GRAND RAPIDS, MICH. — Alan R. Ryan, a retired baking executive, died June 13 at his Grand Rapids home. He was 88.
Mr. Ryan had a career extending longer than 40 years in the biscuit and cracker industry. He was associated with The Keebler Co. for a number of years and was president and chief executive officer of the Burry Division of the Quaker Oats Co. At Quaker, he was a corporate vice-president.
Also during his career, Mr. Ryan was president of the Biscuit and Cracker Manufacturer’s Association.
A native of Grand Rapids, Mr. Ryan was selected in World War II for the Naval Officers Training, and he was stationed in Okinawa, Japan. Later, he graduated from Northwestern University and the Harvard University Graduate School of Business Advanced Management program. He received an honorary doctorate degree in public service from Aquinas College, where he spent more than a decade as a member of the board of trustees.
Mr. Ryan was predeceased by his first wife, Carolyn Hawk Ryan. He is survived by his wife, Margaret Cosmos Ryan; three children, Mary Conrad (and her husband Robert), Mark Ryan (Sharon), and Constance Thomson (Robert).
Visitation for Mr. Ryan will be held at O'Brien-Eggebeen-Gerst Chapel, 3980 Cascade Rd SE, in Grand Rapids Saturday, June 15, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Monday, June 17, at Saint Andrew's Cathedral, 301 Sheldon Blvd. SE, Grand Rapids.
