WASHINGTON — The average price paid for white pan bread and whole wheat bread decreased in August, according to the latest data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor. It is the second month in a row in which the prices for both categories finished lower.
The national average retail price of white pan bread was 140.8c, down 2.6c per lb from July. The decline follows a drop of 0.5c in July. On a month-to-month basis, the average price for white pan bread in August fell in all four regions — down 4.6c in the Midwest, down 3.7c in the Northeast, down 1.9c in the South and down 0.4c in the West.
At 203.6c per lb, the national average price for whole wheat bread was down 2c per lb from July but up 13.1c per lb from August 2012.
The national average price of family flour in August was 52.9c per lb, down 0.1c from July and down 0.2c from August 2012.
The national average price for spaghetti and macaroni in August was 129.6c per lb, down 1.8c from July and down 6.5c from August 2012. Chocolate chip cookies were 345.1c per lb, down 17.9c from July but up 7.7c from August 2012. The national average price of white long-grain rice was 73.7c per lb, up 1.6c from July and up 5.4c from August 2012.
