WASHINGTON — The average price paid for white pan bread rose 0.9c per lb for the second straight month in October while the price for whole wheat bread dropped sharply, according to the latest data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor.
The national average retail price of white pan bread was 141.4c, up 0.9c per lb from September and up 5.6c from October 2013. On a month-to-month basis, the average price for white pan bread in October increased in two regions — up 8.2c in the West and up 4.2c in the Midwest — and fell in two regions — down 3.7c in the South and down 3.5c in the Northeast.
At 200.1c per lb, the national average price for whole wheat bread was down 6.4c per lb from September but up 2.5c per lb from October 2013.
The national average price of family flour in October was 50.1c per lb, down 1.2c from September and down 1.5c from October 2013.
The national average price for spaghetti and macaroni in October was 126.6c per lb, down 8.4c from September and down 1.7c from October 2013. Chocolate chip cookies were 329.5c per lb, down 3.8c from September and down 39.5 from October 2013. The national average price of white long-grain rice was 72.3c per lb, down 2.3c from September and down 1.1c from October 2013.
