HORSHAM, PA. — Bimbo Bakeries USA said it will cease production at its bakery in Plymouth Township, Pa., by the end of this week. The bakery produces Stroehmann bread and buns, as well as Bimbo brand bread, and employs 266 associates, 124 of whom will be affected when the company shifts production to other B.B.U. bakeries in Pennsylvania, the company said.

“This was a difficult decision because of the dedicated team of associates at this bakery,” said Lou Minella, senior vice-president of human relations and law for B.B.U. “However, to succeed in this highly competitive industry, we must ensure that Stroehmann bread and buns and Bimbo bread are produced at our most cost-effective B.B.U. facilities. Moving production to other bakeries, including our new state-of-the-art Lehigh Valley facility, will enable us to produce the fresh, high-quality bread and buns our customers and consumers have come to know and love.”

B.B.U. said it will continue to operate a sales center and distribution facility at the Plymouth location, as well as house some corporate support personnel. The company has nine production facilities in Pennsylvania and employs more than 1,800 associates in the state — approximately 250 associates are employed at its U.S. headquarters in Horsham and 200 work in the new Lehigh Valley Bakery in Macungie Township, Pa.

B.B.U. acquired the Plymouth plant as part of its 2009 purchase of certain U.S. fresh baked goods business assets of George Weston Ltd., including the acquisition of such brands as Arnold, Brownberry, Freihofer’s and Stroehmann.

“Stroehmann is iconic in Philadelphia and the Bimbo brand is gaining popularity,” Mr. Minella said. “This decision is necessary to ensure their success for years to come.”

Last fall, B.B.U. ceased production at its Harrisburg, Pa., plant, which also produced baked goods under the Stroehmann brand.
