WASHINGTON — The average price paid for white pan bread and whole wheat bread both rose sharply in December, according to the latest data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor.
The national average retail price of white pan bread was 146.6c, up 4.6c per lb from November and up 8.1c from December 2013. On a month-to-month basis, the average price for white pan bread in December increased in all four regions — up 6.6c in the Northeast, up 5.4c in the Midwest, up 4.2c in the South and up 1.8c in the West.
At 199.4c per lb, the national average price for whole wheat bread was up 7.3c per lb from November but down 8.2c per lb from December 2013.
The national average price of family flour in December was 51.1c per lb, down 0.4c from November and down 0.2c from December 2013.
The national average price for spaghetti and macaroni in December was 116.4c per lb, down 8.1c from November and down 9.9c from December 2013. Chocolate chip cookies were 349.8c per lb, down 14.3c from November but up 0.6c from December 2013. The national average price of white long-grain rice was 70c per lb, down 1.7c from November and down 3.5c from December 2013.
