PARK RIDGE, ILL. – Meringue, exotic spices and even bacon are some of the items that will affect holiday cookie trends this year, according to the American Egg Board. An on-line Google survey from the Park Ridge-based board found 73% of consumers are willing to try a new type of holiday cookie this year.
Light and airy meringue cookies are making a comeback with their wispy texture and versatility. Also, 52% of consumers have considered adding exotic spices like curry and ginger to their holiday baked foods, according to another on-line Google survey from the American Egg Board.
“Kitchen Sink” cookies may start with familiar dough like chocolate chip and then include salty ingredients, too. Sweet ingredients like mini peanut butter cups, chopped candy bars or dried cherries might start a recipe. Crushed pretzels or even potato chips may be added, too.
Cookie ideas may serve as a hostess gift. For example, dry cookie ingredients may be layered in a mason jar with a recipe card and a label attached. “Santa-sized” cookies, like chocolate peppermint crinkles, may be extra-large and individually wrapped. A classic chocolate chip cookie may even receive a face-lift through a bacon-inspired recipe.
