WASHINGTON — The average price paid for white pan bread increased while the price for whole wheat bread fell in January, according to the latest data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor.
The national average retail price of white pan bread was 147.9c, up 1.3c per lb from December and up 11.4c from January 2014. On a month-to-month basis, the average price for white pan bread in January increased in two regions — up 5.2c in the Northeast and up 1.5c in the West — and fell in two regions — down 2.2c in the Midwest and down 0.2c in the South.
At 194.8c per lb, the national average price for whole wheat bread was down 4.6c per lb from December and down 12.5c per lb from January 2014.
The national average price of family flour in January was 54.5c per lb, up 3.4c from December and up 0.2c from January 2014.
The national average price for spaghetti and macaroni in January was 126.4c per lb, up 10c from December but down 2.6c from January 2014. Chocolate chip cookies were 342.8c per lb, down 7c from December but up 14.9c from January 2014. The national average price of white long-grain rice was 69.2c per lb, down 0.8c from December and down 3.9c from January 2014.
