CINCINNATI – As production has ramped up at the new Whitewater Mill L.L.C. flour mill in West Harrison, operations have ceased at two nearby flour mills.
In an interview Jun 24 with Milling & Baking News, Edward S. (Ted) Nagel, president of H. Nagel and Son, confirmed the closings.
“We operated the mills for 50 years,” he said. “That was the full operating life of the milling equipment.”
Nagel will now be supplied with its flour by Whitewater, which is a joint venture of H. Nagel and Siemer Milling Co. Whitewater had daily flour milling capacity of 10,000 cwts.
The closed mills were in Cincinnati (2,700 cwts), which also operated as Brighton Mills, and Brookville (1,800 cwts).
“The mills were not large enough to meet our needs, both for the flour we sold and for our mix manufacturing,” Mr. Nagel said. The Brookville mill originally was known as Loy’s Mill, built in 1958 by a family that had operated a feed business for most of the 20th century. The mill was acquired by the Nagels in 1973. The Cincinnati mill was commissioned three years later and has always been owned by the Nagels. The mill replaced another that was razed to make room for Interstate Highway 75. The Nagel family has been U.S. flour millers since the 1850s.
For the time being, the Cincinnati and Brookville (20 miles west of Dayton) locations will continue to operate as mix manufacturing plants, Mr. Nagel said. Longer term, he said he expects to replace them by building a mix plant on the site of the Whitewater Mill plant in West Harrison, just west of Cincinnati.
