WASHINGTON, D.C. – Shell eggs broken in the United States during July totaled about 167 million dozen, down 16% from the same month a year ago and down 13% from June 2015, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said.
In July, edible egg products from broken shell eggs included 140 million lbs of whole egg, down 1% from a year ago, 51 million lbs of white, down 31%, and 25 million lbs of yolk, down 34%, the U.S.D.A. said. Egg products from shell eggs broken in July totaled 216 million lbs, down 15% from July 2014. There were 18 million lbs of inedible product from eggs broken, down 10% from July 2014.
January-July shell eggs broken totaled 1,259 million dozen, down 3% from the comparable period in 2014.
During the first half of 2015, a number of key states producing processing eggs, including top-producer Iowa, were hit hard by an outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza spread by migratory birds using north-south flyways that traversed the Midwest. About 48 million domestic chickens and turkeys died or were euthanized as a result.
