WASHINGTON — The average price paid for white pan bread decreased 2.7c per lb in August while the price of whole wheat bread fell 0.7c in the month, according to the latest data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor.
The national average retail price of white pan bread was 142.0c, down 2.7c per lb from July but up 2.4c from August 2014. On a month-to-month basis, the average price for white pan bread in August decreased in three regions — down 4.3c in the South, down 4.2c in the West and down 3.2c in the Midwest — and increased in one region — up 2.9c in the Northeast.
At 195.6c per lb, the national average price for whole wheat bread was down 0.7c per lb from July and down 11.6c per lb from August 2014.
The national average price of family flour in August was 52.4c per lb, up 0.9c from July but down 0.7c from August 2014.
The national average price for spaghetti and macaroni in August was 135.1c per lb, up 2.6c from July but down 2.4c from August 2014. Chocolate chip cookies were 323.3c per lb, down 7.2c from July and down 14.2c from August 2014. The national average price of white long-grain rice was 66.9c per lb, down 0.4c from July and down 6.8c from August 2014.
