HORSHAM, PA. — Artesano style white bread, introduced by Bimbo Bakeries USA in selected U.S. markets beginning in mid-2015, is being rolled out nationally in April, B.B.U. said March 31.
A thick-sliced rich tasting white bread sold under the Sara Lee brand, Artesano is offered in a 20-oz loaf with a frosted poly bag meant to conjure steaming fresh bread. B.B.U. said the nationwide introduction was timed to coincide with National Grilled Cheese Month in April.
Bimbo said Artesano “bridges the bakery and grocery aisle divide with a handmade taste and mouthwateringly soft texture.”
Amid new product introductions of recent years in the bread category, Artesano is unusual for its absence of whole grains, specialty grains or targeted functional health benefit.
A descriptor on the packaging reads, “A new white bread that has the soft texture and rich flavor your family will love,” recommending Artesano “for your favorite sandwich or a delicious French toast on a Sunday morning.”
The product originated in Grupo Bimbo’s baking business in Colombia and, with encouragement from corporate management, found its way into the B.B.U. innovation pipeline.
“Breads like Sara Lee’s new Artesano are a rarity on the grocery shelves, and we’re excited we can bring this quality product to consumers who value flavor and texture, and are looking to make their routine meal remarkable,” said Ben Buch, brand manager for Sara Lee bread. “Artesano bread elevates any recipe it touches, and it’s the perfect way for consumers to bring their sandwich creation to the next level in honor of National Grilled Cheese Month.”
Showcasing Artesano bread’s versatility for grilled cheese sandwiches, B.B.U. has released tips and new recipes. Recommending a light butter coating on the outside of the bread for optimum grilling, new Artesano bread grilled cheese recipes include:
- Hawaiian flavors: An Aloha Pork Grilled Cheese with a recommended use of a sweet, buttery cheese like Havarti into the mix.
- Veggie-centric: The Farm-to-table Grilled Cheese features arugula, broken egg yolk, and a vegetable focus. Pairing the ingredients Gruyere cheese brings balance, B.B.U. said.
- Pickled: As showcased in the Zesty Grilled Cheese, the sandwich utilizes red onion and spicy, artisan pickles. A mild, creamy Fontina cheese helps “mellow out that added zing,” B.B.U. said.
