ASHEVILLE, N.C. — City Bakery, an independent, family-owned company founded in 1999, has begun construction on a new 3,600-square-foot production bakery in Fletcher, N.C. The new facility is expected to allow the company to triple production to meet the needs and demands of its growing wholesale and retail business.
City Bakery said it plans to transfer all of its bread production from its facility located on 60 Biltmore Avenue in Asheville to the new facility in Fletcher once the plant is completed in early summer. The company said the new bakery will allow for expansion into additional areas of Western North Carolina.

“The increased production space will allow us to broaden our presence in Ingles Markets and meet demand for our growing restaurant customers,” said Brian Dennehy, general manager for City Bakery. “We are excited to grow our longstanding relationship of providing fresh artisan bread and pastries to Asheville and the surrounding areas.”
City Bakery bakes a variety of bread daily but specializes in traditional French bread.
“We form our bread by hand and use as little yeast as possible in order to let our bread rise slowly allowing them to develop complex flavors,” the company notes on its web site. “Our amazing pastry staff creates croissants, Danish, eclairs, cupcakes and more and bakes them fresh every day. Need a custom or wedding cake? We specialize in that, too. Breakfast and lunch are served in our cafes.”
City Bakery currently serves wholesale bread customers in the North Carolina cities of Asheville, Waynesville, Weaverville, Black Mountain, Arden, Oteen and Candler. Target areas for expansion include Hendersonville, Mills River and Fletcher.
