WASHINGTON — The average price paid for white pan bread decreased in April, while the price for whole wheat bread increased, according to the latest data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor.
The national average retail price of white pan bread was 140.6c, down 1c per lb from March and down 4.8c from April 2015. On a month-to-month basis, the average price for white pan bread in April increased in two regions — up 4.4c in the West and up 1.3c in the Midwest — and fell in two regions — down 8c in the Northeast and down 2.5c in the South.
At 191.5c per lb, the national average price for whole wheat bread was up 0.6c per lb from March but down 9.3c per lb from April 2015.
The national average price of family flour in April was 52.1c per lb, up 0.9c from March and up 1.2c from April 2015.
The national average price for spaghetti and macaroni in April was 129.4c per lb, down 4.7c from March and down 4.3c from April 2015. Chocolate chip cookies were 342c per lb, up 2c from March and up 8.5c from April 2015. The national average price of white long-grain rice was 70.3c per lb, down 0.8c from March but up 3.3c from April 2015.
