Pea protein pushes ahead
Applications for pea protein have expanded to a broad range of categories, Ms. Dornblaser said. An example is a range of dairy-free beverages from Ripple Foods, which claims to have eight times the protein of almond milk. Another product, Just Mayo, is a vegan spread made with yellow pea protein as a stand-in for eggs.
“Pea protein has been around for awhile now, but it’s interesting to see how much it has expanded to additional categories,” Ms. Dornblaser said. “Pea protein really originally was just about protein powders, but now we see pea protein everywhere. So it’s very well accepted by consumers, and I think what that speaks to is the importance of the protein trend and also that consumers will try a lot of different things.”
