WASHINGTON — The average price paid for white pan bread rebounded off an eight-year low, while the price for whole wheat bread decreased for the first time in four months, according to the latest data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor.
The national average retail price of white pan bread was 134.9c, up 1.6c per lb from June but down 9.8c from July 2015. On a month-to-month basis, the average price for white pan bread in July increased in three regions — up 6c in the West, up 2.3c in the South and up 1c in the Midwest — and fell in one region — down 3.9c in the Northeast.
At 196.6c per lb, the national average price for whole wheat bread was down 1.1c per lb from June but up 0.3c per lb from July 2015.
The national average price of family flour in July was 54.3c per lb, up 1.4c from June and up 2.8c from July 2015.
The national average price for spaghetti and macaroni in July was 132c per lb, up 2.8c from June but down 0.5c from July 2015. Chocolate chip cookies were 321.7c per lb, down 10.3c from June and down 8.8c from July 2015. The national average price of white long-grain rice was 74c per lb, up 0.6c from June and up 6.7c from July 2015.
