HORSHAM, PA. — Bimbo Bakeries USA has announced plans to cease production at two U.S. baking plants, shifting production to other company facilities.
The company’s baking plant in Lubbock, Texas, is expected to be closed by early January 2017. The company said it will shift production to its Rockwall, Texas, plant.
The Lubbock bakery produces bread and buns and employs 75 associates. B.B.U. acquired the Lubbock baking plant as part of its acquisition of Mrs Baird’s in 1998.
“Making the decision to close a facility is never an easy one,” said Wayne Sager, vice-president of region operations for B.B.U. “After careful analysis and consideration, we determined it is most efficient to redistribute production to other bakeries in our system to better meet market demand.”
B.B.U. also said it will cease production at its baking plant in Sunbury by the end of January 2017. The company will shift production to its bakeries throughout Pennsylvania.
The Sunbury bakery produces bread and buns and has 67 employees. The facility was acquired by B.B.U. as part of its acquisition of Sara Lee’s North American Fresh Bakery business in 2011.
“We truly value and respect our dedicated associates at the Sunbury bakery and will assist them throughout the transition,” said Bill Bos, vice-president of region operations at B.B.U.
Earlier this year, B.B.U. halted operations at its baking plant in Hastings, Neb. The company shifted production to its Bellevue, Neb.; South Sioux City, Neb.; Sioux Falls, Neb.; and Topeka, Kas., bakeries.
