WASHINGTON — The average price paid for white pan bread fell 1.1c per lb in January, while the price for whole wheat bread increased 1.5c per lb, according to the latest data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor.
The national average retail price of white pan bread was 135.1c, down 1.1c per lb from December and down 7.4c from January 2016. On a month-to-month basis, the average price for white pan bread in January decreased in three regions — down 2.1c in the South, down 2c in the Midwest and down 0.6c in the Northeast — and increased in one region — up 1.4c in the West.
At 197.5c per lb, the national average price for whole wheat bread was up 1.5c per lb from December and up 3.2c per lb from January 2016.
The national average price of family flour in January was 53c per lb, up 2.7c from December and up 0.8c from January 2016.
The national average price for spaghetti and macaroni in January was 131c per lb, up 2.3c from December and up 4.5c from January 2016. Chocolate chip cookies were 339.7c per lb, down 1.2c from December but up 6.4c from January 2016. The national average price of white long-grain rice was 70c per lb, up 0.7c from December but down 0.9c from January 2016.
