WASHINGTON — The average price paid for white pan bread increased 2.1c per lb in August, while the price for whole wheat bread rose 5.8c per lb, according to the latest data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor.
The national average retail price of white pan bread was 134.8c, up 2.1c per lb from July and up 0.7c from August 2016. On a month-to-month basis, the average price for white pan bread in August increased in three regions — up 5.3c in the South, up 0.5c in the Northeast and up 0.5c in the West — and decreased in one region — down 0.2c in the Midwest.
At 202.5c per lb, the national average price for whole wheat bread was up 5.8c per lb from July and up 3.3c per lb from August 2016.
The national average price of family flour in August was 51.2c per lb, unchanged from July but down 3.4c from August 2016.
The national average price for spaghetti and macaroni in August was 130.5c per lb, up 1.1c from July and up 1.3c from August 2016. Chocolate chip cookies were 356.8c per lb, up 10.1c from July and up 34.9c from August 2016. The national average price of white long-grain rice was 75.3c per lb, down 1.1c from July but up 2.4c from August 2016.
