WASHINGTON — The average price paid for white pan bread increased 2.1c per lb in December, while the price for whole wheat bread decreased 5.4c per lb, according to the latest data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor.
The national average retail price of white pan bread was 131.6c, up 2.1c per lb from November but down 4.6c from December 2016. On a month-to-month basis, the average price for white pan bread in December increased in three regions — up 7.2c in the West, up 3.9c in the Northeast and up 0.5c in the South — and decreased in one region — down 1.2c in the Midwest.
At 197c per lb, the national average price for whole wheat bread was down 5.4c per lb from November but up 1c per lb from December 2016.
The national average price of family flour in December was 46.2c per lb, down 0.7c from November and down 4.1c from December 2016.
The national average price for spaghetti and macaroni in December was 123.5c per lb, down 0.7c from November and down 5.2c from December 2016. Chocolate chip cookies were 360.1c per lb, down 3.8c from November but up 19.2c from December 2016. The national average price of white long-grain rice was 71.1c per lb, down 0.1c from November but up 1.8c from December 2016.
