WASHINGTON — The Food and Drug Administration published a notice in the Nov. 18 Federal Register extending the deadline for comments, scientific data and information on acrylamide in food.
The F.D.A., which is considering issuing guidance on the reduction of acrylamide levels in food products, had said it would accept comments on the topic until Nov. 24. That deadline now has been extended to Jan. 25, 2010.
"The agency believes that this extension allows adequate time for interested persons to submit comments without significantly delaying action by the agency," the F.D.A. said in the notice.
Acrylamide is a chemical that may form in some foods during certain types of high-temperature cooking. It has been found to be carcinogenic in rodents, and it may be a carcinogen for humans.
