CAMDEN, N.J. –The Campbell Soup Co. will reduce the sodium level in its line of SpaghettiOs canned pasta by up to 35%, depending on the variety, the Camden-based company reported Dec. 14. Each one-cup serving of the varieties will have 600 mg of sodium or less.
The current sodium level of SpaghettiOs varieties varies. While SpaghettiOs Original has 630 mg of sodium per serving, Mini Beef Ravioli in Meat Sauce has 1,060 mg, which is more than 40% of the Food and Drug Administration’s Daily Value of 2,400 mg or less for sodium.
Several lower sodium varieties of SpaghettiOs will begin to appear on store shelves in April. They include SpaghettiOs Original, SpaghettiOs A to Zs and licensed shaped pasta varieties such as SpaghettiOs Disney Princesses. Lower sodium versions of the balance of the product line will be available in July and will include SpaghettiOs with Franks and Cars shaped pasta varieties and SpaghettiOs Meatball.
Each one-cup serving of the varieties will contain at least five essential nutrients, a full serving of vegetables. Each serving of all plain varieties will provide a full serving of grains. To meet the F.D.A. and U.S. Department of Agriculture criteria for a healthy main dish, each one-cup serving of all the varieties will be low in fat, low in saturated fat, contain 90 mg or less of cholesterol, contain 600 mg or less of sodium and provide a significant level of at least two positive nutrients.
The plan marks the second time in recent years The Campbell Soup Co. has reduced sodium in SpaghettiOs. In 2007 the company reformulated two SpaghettiOs pasta varieties with 25% less sodium.
