MEXICO CITY – Organizacion Barcel, a Mexico-based subsidiary of Grupo Bimbo S.A.B. de C.V., has begun using degradable metallic polypropylene packaging that disintegrates within three to five years after a product’s shelf life, Grupo Bimbo said May 15. Mexico City-based Grupo Bimbo gradually will implement the measure on a global level and expects to fully incorporate degradable metallic packaging by the first quarter of 2011. The technology involved incorporates a pro-degrading additive during the manufacturing process of the packaging. The additive helps break the plastics’ molecular chains and causes the plastic to degrade at the end of its lifetime.
