LONDON — The United Kingdom’s Food Standards Agency on March 26 recommended manufacturers reduce saturated fat in baked foods and chocolate and reduce added sugar in soft drinks.
The agency recommended reducing the saturated fat level in some chocolate confectionery (bars with fillings) by at least 10%, reducing the saturated fat content in plain sweet and savory biscuits, and plain cakes by at least 10%, and reducing the saturated fat content in non-plain biscuits and cakes by at least 5%. The agency recommended making available 250-ml single-portion sizes of soft drinks that contain added sugar.
The agency this summer plans to make recommendations on dairy products, meat products, pastry and savory snacks.
