OSLO, NORWAY — The Food and Drug Administration has accepted with no objections the notification of an independent Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) determination for the use of Superba krill oil as a food ingredient, Aker BioMarine Antarctic, the maker of the ingredient, said Aug. 9. Superba krill oil provides omega-3 fatty acids in the form of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).
The GRAS notice from Aker BioMarine sought the use of krill oil as a direct food ingredient in breakfast cereals, cheese, non-alcoholic beverages, fruit juices, frozen dairy desserts, milk products and medical foods at levels up to 500 mg per serving.
“We have clinical studies under way and in development with our customers internationally,” said Nils Hoem, chief scientist at Aker BioMarine. “Seeking to substantiate the health benefits of krill oil for joint health, mental acuity, heart health issues and other emerging areas of study will help our customers deliver krill products with validated health benefits, expanding the scope of the omega-3 market today.”
