WASHINGTON — The average price paid for white pan bread rose in June while the price of whole wheat bread fell, according to the latest data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor.

The national average retail price of white pan bread was 138.3c, up 2.4c per lb from May but down 0.2c from June 2009. The price gain comes on the heels of two consecutive months of lower prices. On a month-to-month basis, the average price for white pan bread rose in two regions — up 7.2c in the Northeast and up 5.5c in the South — and fell in one region — down 4.2c in the West. A fourth region, the Midwest, held unchanged in the month.

At 176.8c per lb, the national average price for whole wheat bread was down 1.8c per lb from May and down 8c per lb from June 2009. The retail price has now fallen 5.3c per lb in the past two months.

The national average price of family flour in June was 48.4c per lb, down 0.1c from May and down 3.2c from June 2009.

The national average price for spaghetti and macaroni in June was 111.7c per lb, up 2.5c from May but down 6.1c from June 2009. Chocolate chip cookies were 329.5c per lb, up 2.4c from May and up 4.7c from June 2009.
