JEFFERSON CITY, MO. — Sliced bread may get its own day, at least in Missouri. Rusty Black, a state representative from Chillicothe, Mo., on Feb. 7 introduced H.B. 1349 in the state legislature in Jefferson City. The bill would designate July 7 as “Missouri Sliced Bread Day.”
The American Society of Baking, Kansas City, gives Otto Rohwedder credit for inventing a bread slicer machine that led to the commercialization of sliced bread. The machine was installed July 7, 1928, in the Chillicothe Baking Company of Chillicothe. The A.S.B. inducted Mr. Rohwedder into its Baking Hall of Fame in 2008.
