WASHINGTON — The average price paid for white pan bread decreased 3.5c per lb in January, while the price for whole wheat bread increased 6.3c per lb, according to the latest data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor.
The national average retail price of white pan bread was 128.1c, down 3.5c per lb from December and down 7c from January 2017. On a month-to-month basis, the average price for white pan bread in January increased in two regions — up 1c in the West and up 1c in the South — and decreased in two regions — down 11c in the Northeast and down 4.8c in the Midwest.
At 203.3c per lb, the national average price for whole wheat bread was up 6.3c per lb from December and up 5.8c per lb from January 2017.
The national average price of family flour in January was 47.1c per lb, up 0.9c from December but down 5.9c from January 2017.
The national average price for spaghetti and macaroni in January was 121.8c per lb, down 1.7c from December and down 9.2c from January 2017. Chocolate chip cookies were 368.1c per lb, up 8c from December and up 28.4c from January 2017. The national average price of white long-grain rice was 68.2c per lb, down 2.9c from December and down 1.8c from January 2017.
