OKLAHOMA CITY — A new menu item at Sonic Drive-In features a state fair-inspired treat: deep-fried Oreo cookies.
The Oreo A La Mode includes an Oreo cookie, battered and fried, and served with vanilla ice cream.
Sonic also is offering Cinnabon Cinnasnacks A La Mode, featuring flaky pastries packed with cinnamon roll filling and vanilla ice cream. The products are available for a limited time.
“Balancing the richness of your favorite warm dessert with the refreshing creaminess of ice cream has become common practice for a reason,” said Scott Uehlein, vice-president of product innovation and development for Sonic, now a subsidiary of Inspire Brands, Inc. “With the new Oreo and Cinnasnacks A La Mode, we took what many traditionally do with a pie or brownie fresh from the oven to create an entirely new experience.”
Carnival foods are inspiring menu innovation at other fast-food chains. Deep-fried Twinkies have appeared on the menu at Long John Silver’s (Hostess Brands has since launched a frozen packaged version at Walmart stores), and Burger King recently launched Funnel Cake Fries, topped with powdered sugar.
