WASHINGTON — The average price paid for white pan bread rose 2.9c per lb in October and has now increased 5c over the past two months, according to the latest data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor. The price of whole wheat bread also advanced, rising 1.3c per lb.
The national average retail price of white pan bread was 132.5c, up 2.9c per lb from September and up 4.8c from October 2018. On a month-to-month basis, the average price for white pan bread in October increased in two regions — up 7.6c in the South and up 4.6c in the Northeast — and declined in two regions — down 4.2c in the West and down 0.4c in the Midwest.
At 194.8c per lb, the national average price for whole wheat bread was up 1.3c per lb from September and up 3.8c per lb from October 2018.
The national average price of family flour in October was 43.2c per lb, down 1.7c from September and down 2.1c from October 2018.
The national average price for spaghetti and macaroni in October was 117.8c per lb, down 0.6c from September but up 4c from October 2018. Chocolate chip cookies were 360.2c per lb, up 1.5c from September and up 14.6c from October 2018. The national average price of white long-grain rice was 77.3c per lb, down 2.4c from September but up 8.8c from October 2018.
