Health has become a hot trend in the cookie category, with several new products packing protein, probiotics and other functional benefits.
The Cookie Dept.’s Fully Functional Cookies, for example, feature classic cookie flavors fortified with coffee caffeine, whey protein, superfoods, antioxidants, probiotics and detoxifying spices.
With 10 grams of whey protein, Big Life Snacks Protein Cookies are low in sugar and free of wheat, soy, egg and bioengineered ingredients. Sweet Fuel Protein Bites from Athletic Kitchen are gluten- and grain-free with a brownie taste and texture.
Several new candy products offer functional benefits, too. Ferrara Candy Co.’s RAP Protein Energy Gummies contain whey protein isolate and B vitamins. Georgia Nut Co. has introduced Probiotic Gems, which are shelled chocolates that are made without artificial flavors, colors and titanium and feature GanadenBC30, a proprietary probiotic developed by Ganaden Biotech.
